more on the hawaiian kingdom government in the news today:
the hawaiian sovereignty organization that has occupied the mauka lawn of iolani palace during daylight hours on weekdays since last wednesday now has a permit to do so through friday.
the hawaiian kingdom government was issued a public assembly permit yesterday morning after submitting the application last friday afternoon.
such permits are required for any group that holds an assembly of 25 or more people at a state park, state land board chairwoman laura h. thielen said yesterday afternoon.
the permit for a "public assembly" was signed by mahealani kahau, who identified herself as "her royal majesty" for the organization. the permit lists the nature of the activity as "aha for nationhood." "aha" is hawaiian for a meeting, gathering or assembly.
where it requires a signature for someone to sign agreeing to abide by state statutes there is handwritten "hawaiian kingdom law, 1859 civil code, 1869 penal code."
members of the hawaiian kingdom government, one of several hawaiian organizations that claim to not recognize the authority of the united states or hawaii state governments, believe they have the right to conduct business from the iolani palace grounds as their "seat of government."
since wednesday, up to about 75 people from the organization have gathered on the lawn, but not entered the palace itself.

this is apparently not a photographic evidence that chinese p.l.a. soldiers were disguising themselves as tibetan monks to incite violence in lhasa. in fact, this photograph was taken taken in 2001 from the set of a movie called "the touch," where these p.l.a. soldiers were dressed up as monks to serve as extras in that film.

the honolulu advertiser:
a hawaiian sovereignty group yesterday spent a second day peacefully occupying the mauka lawn of iolani palace, claiming once again to be the legitimate government of hawaii.
but unlike most of the first day, non-hawaiians were not blocked from entering the property by the group identifying itself as the hawaiian kingdom government. the palace and hawaii state archives, both shut down to business on wednesday, were open to the public yesterday.
group members, who began disbanding about 4 p.m., said they would be back again today and every day for the foreseeable future.
the group's actions are not a protest or demonstration but a reoccupying of its legitimate seat of government, security officers who would not give their names told the advertiser.
tourists strolled the short distance from the iolani barracks to the palace for tours, many of them oblivious to the occupation nearby. about a half-dozen japanese tourists rode around the historic palace on segways, took a brief look around, and left.
nate and sarah jeffs, first-time hawaii visitors from salt lake city, were among those unaware of the action being taken by the hawaiian kingdom government.
"i'm sure if they feel their case is legitimate, it's good for them to try and be heard," nate jeffs said. "maybe blocking off access isn't the right venue to go about that."
jim and ann aitken of 'aina haina were at the palace accompanying relatives who are visiting from the mainland.
jim aitken said he thinks hawaiians should be channeling their energies toward helping others such as the homeless along the waianae coast, many of whom are hawaiian. "rather than taking this place away from everybody," aitken said. "this belongs to everyone now."
marialena kalamau, of kapolei, who identified herself as a member of the hawaiian kingdom government, said much of the public has misinterpreted the situation.
"if you know the culture, how liliuokalani was overthrown, then you would understand the urgency of the hawaiian people," kalamau said. her mother, dixie kalamau of nanakuli, also an organization member, said the purpose of the group is to "get back what is rightfully ours. we're going to start here and we're going to work our way whatevers."
she added: "the white man came and made us think the government was overthrown--it was not."

photographs of the ionani palace takeover:

all gates and entrances to iolani palace were locked and guarded yesterday by members of a hawaiian sovereignty group called the hawaiian kingdom government. the takeover began yesterday around 5:30 a.m.

mahealani kahau, center right, spokeswoman and head of the so-called hawaiian kingdom government denies a man access to a common walkway across the palace grounds after the group took over the government property to use as its headquarters. kahau is pointing to a sign on an iron gate blocking the entrance, which states: warning no trespassing, hawaii kingdom government. this is the law, she told daniel pelt, the visitor at the gate. pelt responded: all of you against one haole boy? what is all of this aggression? kahau answered that the authorities knew of the group's takeover and agreed with it. then he left.

mahealani kahau is surrounded by her bodyguards as she patrols the grounds of iolani palace. about 30 members of her group took over the palace grounds earlier in the day. group members say they do not recognize the state or federal government. a docent named gladys, far right, joined the group. she said she had worked at the palace for 15 years and welcomed the takeover and wondered why it had taken so long.

visitors with reservations to tour the palace waited outside the locked gates, unable to enter.

mahealani kahau talked with honolulu police chief boise correa after her group took over the grounds of iolani palace. correa would not tell the media what they had spoken about and said the palace grounds were not his jurisdiction, but that of the state.

mahealani kahau talks with kippen de alba chu, executive director of iolani palace.

tourists from california with reservations to tour the palace are kept from entering the palace grounds by a member of the so-called hawaiian kingdom government.

richard kinney, a hawaiian sovereignty supporter, carries an upside down hawaiian flag on the grounds of iolani palace, in support of the hawaiian kingdom government.

hawaii separatist group, the hawaiian kingdom government, occupies the grounds of iolani palace for eight hours.
the honolulu advertiser:
a hawaiian sovereignty group occupied the grounds of iolani palace, locked the gates and blocked non-hawaiians from entering for about eight hours yesterday to protest the u.s.-backed overthrow of the hawaiian government more than a century ago.
the protest was conducted by the hawaiian kingdom government, one of several groups that claim to be the successor government of hawaii.
no arrests were made yesterday and the protest ended peacefully with the group removing the locks it had placed on the gates at around 5:30 a.m.
a number of symbolic protests have been staged on the palace grounds to draw attention to native hawaiian issues, but yesterday's action went further than most by actually locking the gates to the palace grounds and shutting down the former residence of hawaiian royalty.
honolulu police department chief boisse correa arrived on the property at around noon. correa sat cross-legged on the grass and spoke with mahealani kahau, leader of the group, for about 10 minutes and left.
kahau said correa told her that because palace grounds are under the jurisdiction of the state, h.p.d. is not required to take any action against the group.
the palace was shut down to business for the day and roughly 35 employees sent home except for two security officers. the state archives office also was closed to the public for the day and about 10 employees sent home.
kahau and other leaders of the group began meeting with state officials earlier this week. kippen de alba chu, executive director of friends of iolani palace, said he and d.l.n.r. officials were given papers from the hawaiian kingdom government on monday "claiming that they are the legitimate government and not subject to state law."
"this is the seat of government; we're not going to go away," kahau said. "the hawaiian kingdom government has resumed its lawful status as the functioning government."
between 50 and 70 people claiming to be part of the hawaiian kingdom government arrived at the palace grounds at about 5:30 a.m. yesterday and began locking each of the roughly eight entrances. they also placed signs stating, "warning! no trespassing; this is private property" on the famous wrought-iron gates surrounding the palace.
group security guards stationed at the gates allowed in people with hawaiian blood and members of the news media. non-Hawaiians were told they would be allowed entry only if they "registered" with the government.
the group did not enter the palace itself, where two iolani palace personnel stayed in place throughout the day.
at about 2 p.m., d.l.n.r. law enforcement chief gary moniz met briefly with kahau. shortly thereafter, the gates to the grounds were reopened.
kahau said the members of her group were unarmed and that they neither intended to occupy the palace itself or get themselves arrested.
the hawaiian kingdom government is one of the lesser known groups that claim to be the legitimate representatives of native hawaiians. the group does not recognize u.s. or hawaii state authority.
other sovereignty groups include the reinstated hawaiian government headed by henry noa, and the independent and sovereign national state of hawaii (nation of hawaii) headed by dennis puuhonua "bumpy" kanahele.
the group received several calls of support from the leaders of other sovereignty organizations yesterday, kahau said, including kanahele and noa.
several members of hui pu, a loose-knit group of sovereignty organizations, came to the palace to show support.
andre perez, a hui pu member, said "all hawaiians seeking self-determination and self-governance should support these kinds of actions."

socialism is a discredited economic theory? says who? the people who called the u.s.s.r. or the p.r.c. "socialist" are the same people who calls this amalgamation of capitalism and [proto-]fascism a "democracy." the bourgeoisie maintain their hegemony and privileges by keeping people divided--by passing off greed, competition, and selfish "individualism" as "human nature." i don't believe that these traits are inherent in us; we are a product of social conditioning brought on by capitalism. we should aim for a more egalitarian society based on human camaraderie, cooperation, and mutual aid, because i refuse to believe that this miserable existence is the best that mankind could ever hope to achieve.
the revolution begins in your heart.

Obama not born in U.S., say some - The Honolulu Advertiser

possibly the only post i will make on the 2008 u.s. presidential election: hawaii-born barack obama not a natural-born u.s. citizen, according to some hawaii secessionists.
from the page:
some native hawaiians think hawaii-born barack obama can't be president of the united states because he was born in an independent sovereign nation: the kingdom of hawaii.
a few independence advocates claim that hawaii legally remains a country today, making obama and hundreds of thousands of others born in the islands over the past 50 years not "natural-born" citizens or eligible to be president.
"obama was born in the hawaiian kingdom," said leon siu, a native hawaiian and musician who brought up the issue in a column he wrote on a news web site. "not only was the overthrow of the hawaiian kingdom illegal, it was admitted to be illegal by the united states."
siu was referring to the "apology resolution" passed by congress in 1993 acknowledging wrongdoing in the overthrow of the hawaiian monarchy 100 years before and recognizing the inherent sovereignty of the indigenous islanders over their land.
john mccain has faced more questions than obama over whether he meets the legal requirement to qualify for the nation's highest office because he was born in the panama canal zone in 1936.
both mccain and obama appear to qualify for the presidency because they were born in united states lands, said university of hawaii constitutional law professor jon van dyke.
"it would be unlikely that any court would take seriously an argument that senator obama was not a natural-born citizen," van dyke said. "for the moment, hawaii is a state... and the people of hawaii taken as a whole seem not to be seeking secession, as a few people are."
even those who believe in hawaii's inherent sovereignty don't deny that the world recognizes it as part of the united states, allowing their argument no effect on the presidential election.
people who consider themselves part of a hawaiian nation don't need to get involved in u.s. politics anyway, said jonathan osorio at the university of hawaii's center for hawaiian studies.
"we don't have to get involved in it because it's the americans' problem," osorio said. "why should we care if this is an election that is for the united states and not hawaiian nationals?"
